Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim, Eamon Scanlon, has said farmers are finally being shown some respect from the Department of Agriculture as they agree to pay farmers whose land had been damaged by gorse fires on Killery Mountain, which spans Counties Sligo and Leitrim
He commented, “It is very welcome news that the Basic Payment Scheme will be issued to farmers who had lost land because of the gorse fires on Killery Mountain.
“Farmers have lost out on thousands in payment all because of gorse fires they had nothing to do with. I have repeatedly raised this matter in the Dáil. Debating with the Minister for Agriculture it was frustrating that he would not treat these farmers with respect and issue the payments. Thankfully this has now changed.
“Having reached this agreement I am calling on the Minister and his Department to ensure that payment is issued as speedily as possible to farmers,” concluded Deputy Scanlon.
