Fianna Fail TD for Cork South Central Michael McGrath says serious questioned need to be answered about the management of works on the Maryborough Hill Green Route in Douglas, following a series of delays and setbacks.  Work on the project began almost a year ago, but ceased for a number of months during the summer when further investigation was deemed necessary.

Deputy McGrath commented, “The initial deadline for this project was May this year but the completion date keeps getting pushed back.  In the meantime, residents are being seriously inconvenienced.  As well as traffic delays, the road surface is in a terrible condition and it can be a challenge to navigate.  Locals are understandably frustrated with the ongoing delays”.

This scheme will result in a major upgrade of the road, including a dedicated bus lane, improved footpaths and road surface, safe pedestrian crossings and a new cycle lane.  However, the length of time that the works have been ongoing is a source of major concern and annoyance.

“I have been contacted by irate residents whose everyday lives are being disrupted by these works. Serious questions will need to be answered by the Council in terms of the management and delivery of this project as well as the financial implications for the delays.  I am now informed that the new completion date is the end of February next year which is extremely disappointing given the general expectation that the work would be complete before the year end”, he concluded.
