Meet Fiona

Vice President of the Fianna Fáil Party. Member of the Seanad Reform Committee, Votáil 100 Committee and the Inaugural Women’s Caucus.

Characterised by her energy, commitment and the ability to engage and connect with people, Fiona is a native of Rathangan and living in Newbridge.

With a background in education (as a teacher), local government (member of Kildare County Council and Newbridge Town Council) and the Special Olympics (2003 World Summer Games and subsequently as an advocate for people with intellectual disability across Europe), Fiona has had diverse experiences which inform and support her work as a member of the Dáil since she was elected in 2016.

The Education and Skills Committee chaired by Fiona, has produced 15 reports on topics such as Positive Mental Health in Schools, the Challenges Facing Island Schools, a Scrutiny of Education Bills, The Eligibility of Maintenance Grants to Students, Healthy Eating for Schools and Education for Vulnerable Groups. Fiona also tirelessly works on behalf of all schools in her constituency to ensure the best education provision for all students.

Fiona is a member of the Committee on the Future of Mental Healthcare which examines the myriad of issues facing all stakeholders in mental health in Ireland.

She has introduced 5 bills in the Dáil and has been involved in the formation of legislation to address social problems such as hate crimes and revenge pornography, domestic violence and mental health.

Fiona is very involved in her local communities supporting volunteers, arts and community groups and festivals, Tidy town groups and local businesses. Describing herself as ‘Kildare to the core’, Fiona is passionate about representing and serving the needs of South Kildare which now includes parts of Laois and Offaly.
