Michael is currently the Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Finance.
Michael grew up in the harbour town of Passage West, Cork. He first ran for office in 1999 when he was successfully elected to the then Passage West Town Commission. He went on to be elected to Cork County Council in 2004. He was elected to Dáil Éireann at the first attempt in 2007 and was re-elected in 2011 and 2016.
Michael studied Commerce in UCC and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in Cork City. Before going into politics full time, Michael held senior positions in both the private and public sector. Michael is currently a member of the Joint Oireachtas Finance Committee and has previously served on a number of other committees including the Oireachtas Banking Inquiry, the Public Accounts Committee and the European Affairs Committee. Michael was part of Fianna Fáil’s team which negotiated the terms of the Confidence and Supply agreement in 2016 which ensured a government was formed following the inconclusive general election result.
