John lives in Ballyheigue, Co. Kerry with his wife Bernadette and their 3 children. He attended Bouleenshere NS, Ballyheigue and St Brendan’s College, Killarney. John then qualified as civil engineer at UCC, working in the industry for a number of years. In 1994 he trained as a pharmacist at Trinity College Dublin, and returned to Kerry to run the family business, Brassil’s Pharmacy in Ballyheigue.
John was first elected to Kerry County Council in 1999 and was Mayor of Kerry in 2014/15. John was elected to Dáil Eireann in 2016.
He is the Fiannna Fail Spokesperson for Primary Care and Community Healthcare. He has a keen interest in health policy and sat on the Future of Healthcare Committee which produced the Slaintecare report in 2017. He currently sits on the Future of Mental Healthcare Committee, tasked with implementing a single, long term vision for mental healthcare and policy in Ireland.
John is a keen sports fan, and is a follower of Ballyheigue and Kerry GAA, and Munster and Ireland Rugby.
