Cllr. James Collins

Councillor on Limerick City and County Council

Meet James

I am Cathaoirleach of Limerick Metropolitan Council, former Mayor of Limerick and an elected councillor since 2009.

I live on O’Connell Avenue with my wife Eileen and our 4 children. I grew up in Dooradoyle, studied Business in UL, and worked as a management consultant before opening Collins Bar with Eileen, creating 30 jobs.

I stand for a smart, green, entrepreneurial Limerick, where housing, health and transport services meet your needs. I stand for A Limerick that works for you.

➡️ Incineration: Working closely with Limerick Against Pollution to lead the fight against hazardous waste incineration at Irish Cement in Mungret. As one of the original architects of Mungret Park, and a board member of Mungret Community College, stopping this potential disaster is a top priority.

➡️ Housing: Funding local authorities to develop their land banks for social and public housing, reintroducing the Rent Tax Credit discontinued by Fine Gael, and helping squeezed first time buyers with access to a €50,000 Affordable Purchase Scheme.

➡️ Health: Restoring pay parity to consultants to fill 500 consultant vacancies; recruiting nursing staff and opening the 300 extra beds required to turn University Hospital Limerick from the most overcrowded and underfunded hospital in the country into the centre of excellence we were promised.

➡️ Transport: Reforming appalling bus services, introducing park and ride facilities at Raheen, Caherdavin, and Castletroy to alleviate traffic and pollution, and providing more segregated cycle lanes and safe public space in the city centre.

➡️ Jobs: Bringing my experience as a director of Limerick 2030 and UL governor to strengthen and replicate job success stories such as Troy Studios, Gardens International and UL city centre campus at Sarsfield Bridge.

➡️ Crime: Employing more civilians in Garda stations to put more Gardaí back in communities, visiting schools and clubs, preventing crime, as well as solving it.
