Stormont’s renewed commitment to the new Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital will come as a major relief to patients in Donegal and across the Northwest, according to local Fianna Fáil Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill.
Senator Ó Domhnaill said, “I am pleased that the new Health Minister Edwin Poots has had the good sense to overturn the disastrous decision made by his predecessor in March to shelve plans for a new Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin.
“This unit is key to the development of accessible cancer services in the Northwest. It’s estimated that a third of the patients who will be treated at the new unit will be from Donegal and the surrounding areas. Recognising this, there has always been a strong commitment from the Department of Health in Dublin to contributing €19 million to the project.
“I am delighted that Stormont’s new Health Minister Edwin Poots seems similarly commited to the unit. He has pledged to provide enough funding to allow the unit to open by 2016, in a move that will make an enormous difference to cancer patients in Donegal and beyond.”
