Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has welcomed confirmation that the HSE agreed in principle to reimburse Freestyle Libre on an individualised basis but called for the device to be extended to all requiring it under the scheme. Deputy Smyth received confirmation from the HSE following parliamentary questions to the Minister for Health on the matter.
Deputy Smyth commented “The change has been very welcome for my constituents with Type 1 Diabetes who have campaigned for the reimbursement of Freestyle Libre. There are restrictions on reimbursement through the scheme as it is only confined to children and young adults via their hospital clinician.
“The monitoring system has the potential to be life changing for constituents in Cavan-Monaghan. The Freestyle Libre device allows people to monitor their blood glucose levels easier and less invasively.
“We need to ensure that it does deliver value for money for patients, but we also need to remember the quality of life improvements that using this device can deliver for patients. The Minister must acknowledge this, and I await the forthcoming review which will be an indicator in extending the product to all those requiring it,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
