Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Disability Margaret Murphy O’Mahony has said that ratifying the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with a Disability (UNCRPD) must be an immediate priority for the Government.
Commenting on the issue Deputy Murphy O’Mahony said, “The Programme for Partnership Government states that the legislation necessary to ratify the UNCRPD will be put before the Oireachtas before the end of 2016. Given that we are almost half way through 2016 I am anxious that we see movement on this.
“This Government must make people with disabilities a priority, and I as the Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Disability will hold the Government to account and ensure that people with disabilities are not relegated to the back of the queue as has happened under Fine Gael and Labour.
“There needs to be a sense of urgency regarding the ratification of the UNCRPD and I am calling on Ministers Fitzgerald and McGrath to ensure that that this is an immediate priority for the Government”.
