Fianna Fáil TD for Wexford and Party Spokesperson on Mental Health James Browne TD has welcomed the news that President Michael D Higgins has passed the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2017 into law.
The Bill was put forward by Deputy Browne and will reform Ireland’s mental health services by insisting on the implementation of the recommendations contained in the 2015 report on the Expert Group on the Review of the Mental Health Act.
Deputy Browne said, “I’m delighted the President has signed this importance piece of legislation into law. During the course of my work on this I had the opportunity to meet with advocacy groups and people working in our mental health services. They pointed out the significant reforms that are needed to make our mental health services fit for purpose. This new law will help ensure the necessary reforms take place.
“This is an example of how new politics can be successful and help improve services. The Bill I brought forward received cross-party support in the Dáil. Politicians from all parties and none recognised the need to come together to help implement the necessary reforms for our mental health services.
“I will now be working to ensure that the Government and HSE deliver on these reforms,” concluded Deputy Browne.
