Fianna Fáil’s Seanad Spokesperson on Education Averil Power is urging families in Dublin who are eligible for the Back to School Allowance to apply immediately as the deadline approaches.

The closing date for applications for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance is this Monday, September 30th

Senator Power says the payment is a vital support to families who are seriously struggling with extra costs at this time of the year.

“This is an extremely expensive time of year, especially for young families. The Back to School allowance has always been a life-line for struggling families in Dublin, as they grapple with big bills for uniforms, sports gear, school books, stationery and other essential school equipment,” the north Dublin Senator said.

“The government introduced sneaky cuts to the Back to School Allowance in December’s budget, which are now kicking in. The allowance has been slashed by €50 per child for the new school year. It means the payment for children over the age of 12 has reduced from €250 to €200 while the payment for children between 4 and 11 has gone down from €150 to €100. All of this as the latest inflation figures show a 5% increase in education costs when compared to last year.

“However, it is important that the tens of thousands of families in Dublin who are eligible for the allowance this year get what they are entitled to. Every little bit of support helps at what is an extremely difficult time financially for parents. Those families who will receive the payment automatically should have been informed of this in June. Anyone else who is applying for the first time or for an additional child can apply online at www.welfare.ie or through the local social welfare office.”
