Fianna Fáil Senator Averil Power has condemned the tiger kidnapping of her local postmistress in Bayside last night. The kidnappers broke into the home of the postmistress and held herself and two other women hostage. They then forced her to open the post office this morning.
Senator Power said: “Tiger kidnapping is every business person’s worst nightmare and this must have been a particularly frightening experience for these three women.
“I live across the road from this post office and residents are in shock this morning. This is not the first attack on our local post office. The community is appalled by this attack and concerned about public safety.
“Serious crimes are on the increase in Dublin and people are feeling less safe in their own homes. The gardaí acted swiftly on this case this morning and they are to be praised and supported in their work but it is clear that the gardaí in Dublin need more resources to police our streets safely.
“The Government also needs to do more to tackle the problem of tiger kidnappings. Fianna Fáil published legislation in January 2012 which would put in place a minimum 10 year jail term for tiger kidnappings but the Government has failed to take any action on this.
“The Government needs to respond to callous crimes which target the family members of people working in the financial sector. Many families have been terrorised by gangs in recent years and as legislators we need to make it clear to the thugs behind such kidnappings that the State is serious about stopping them.”
