Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Trade Niall Collins TD says the international community cannot turn its back on the Palestinian people.

Deputy Collins made the comments after returning from a fact-finding mission which included visits to Jerusalem, Ramallah and Hebron. He was accompanied by Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Business, Enterprise and Innovation Billy Kelleher TD.

Deputy Collins said, “The plight of the Palestinian people is becoming more desperate by the day. They are living under tremendous hardship and have no sense of security in their lives. They feel abandoned by the international community as there is no coherent peace process plan in place.

“During our visit we saw first-hand the enormous struggles that the Palestinian people face in trying to lead their daily lives. We met with a number of NGO’s who highlighted that the humanitarian situation on the ground is continuing to deteriorate. There are serious concerns for the future if the conflict continues to escalate.

“Our own experience here in Ireland shows that the greatest of community divides can be bridged when people are committed to a peace process. It’s important that the international community steps up its efforts and puts pressure on both sides to commit to a peace process. We cannot turn our backs on the Palestinian people in their greatest hour of need,” concluded Deputy Collins.
