Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has warned against plans to introduce new arrangements for the border and to impose tariffs on products being exported from the Republic to the United Kingdom.

Deputy Smyth commented, “This plan will have massive ramifications on the Republic’s Agri-food sector if allowed to be introduced. We in the border region are most at risk from these tariffs and they have triggered much concern in my constituency.

“The EU will obviously have to respond to the plans to allow goods to travel freely between the Republic and Northern Ireland in the short term and the Irish government will have to elaborate on their own plans to respond to this plan. This is causing great anxiety in Cavan-Monaghan given we have so much cross border trade. It is a daily journey undertaken by so many in the constituency.

“The government needs to publish the research they have conducted in preparation for this scenario. The Taoiseach must outline immediately the full details on levels of preparedness.

“The government should, without delay, put a plan in place to respond to protect those in border counties,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
