Fianna Fáil TD for Waterford Mary Butler says the granting of planning permission for a second cath lab at University Hospital Waterford is welcome progress on the project.

Waterford City and County Council has confirmed that it’s given the green light for construction on the long awaited cath lab to begin.

Deputy Butler said, “I welcome this latest progress on the second cath lab and am hopeful that work on the building can begin shortly. It has been a difficult process to get to this stage, with the government continually dragging its heels on the project.

“There is a real disconnect between Fine Gael and the reality of the situation for people in Waterford. The government took years to understand that people in the South East are dependent on an out of hours ambulance service for those needing cardiac intervention because of the restricted service time.

“It took huge pressure from myself and other local representatives before the government woke up to the seriousness of the situation.

“The granting of planning permission is a huge step forward and it is imperative now that a contractor is appointed so that the unit can move to a 24/7 service as soon as possible.

“I am also calling on the Health Minister to publish the National Review for Cardiac Services. This was due last Summer but we are still waiting on its publication”.
