John Lahart joined Fianna Fáil in 1983 at the invitation of the late Seamus Brennan. Since 1983 he has been a member of the Clann an Phiarsaigh Cumann in Rathfarnham and has served at every level in the local party organisation.
In 1992 he was appointed as Adviser to Minister of state Tom Kitt TD and served in that position until 1994.

In 1999 he was elected at his first attempt as Councillor for Rathfarnham.

In November 2000 he returned to work as Political Adviser to Minister Tom Kitt and served in the Departments of Enterprise, Trade & Employment and Foreign Affairs before being appointed Special Adviser in the Department of An Taoiseach to the Government Chief Whip in 2004, a position he held for the remainder of that Government’s term.

In 2004 he topped the poll in his second local election gaining the second highest vote nationally.

John has successfully directed four general election campaigns for Tom Kitt (1992, 1997, 2002, 2007) and embarked on a new professional career in June 2007 following another successful general election campaign in Dublin South.

He was appointed to the Committee of the Regions of the EU by the Government in 2008.

John Lahart is from Ballyroan in Rathfarnham and lives in Scholarstown, Knocklyon. He was educated locally at Scoil an Spiorad Naomh, Ballyroan and at Colaiste Eanna CBS, Ballyroan. He graduated from Mater Dei Institute of Education in 1988 and completed his Masters Degree in 1996. In 2007 he graduated with a BSc (Counselling & Psychotherapy) from Middlesex University. He now operates a Communications Consultancy company as well as a Counselling Practice.

John is a member of Ballyboden St Enda’s GAA Club, Knocklyon Utd FC and Edmondstown Golf Club.

Previously a Board Member of County Dublin VEC, South Dublin County Enterprise Board and Chair of the Arts & Culture Strategic Policy Committee of South Dublin County Council.
