Liam became a member of Donegal County Council in May 2003 representing the Milford Electoral Area, which is due to be amalgamated with the Letterkenny Electoral Area for the Local Elections in 2009. Following his brother Niall’s election to Dáil Éireann in 2002 and the banning of the dual mandate, Liam was co-opted onto Donegal County Council and was returned following the 2004 Local Elections. This follows a long tradition of the Blaney family being represented on Donegal County Council, with his brother, father and uncle all having previously served also.
