Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Dara Calleary has criticised the Minister for Employment Affairs & Social Protection as pensioners in County Mayo remain in doubt while a pension review is underway to consider their entitlement to an increase in the State Contributory Pension.
A review in relation to post Budget 2012 band rates is currently underway.
Deputy Calleary said, “The changes brought in by the previous government were a disaster. My Party colleagues and I fought hard to have the government rectify these issues and a review was commenced.
“The changes resulted in thousands of people being denied their entitlement to a full state pension. Whilst I am of course glad that reviews are underway and that a number of pensioners have received their revised payment I am dismayed by the slow pace of the review process.
“I have met with pensioners across County Mayo who are very concerned as time passes by with no decision made for their review. The slow pace of delivery is extremely unfair to those pensioners whose pension payments are unfairly reduced in 2012.
“We now have a situation in which pensioners may have to wait up to two years before a decision is reached. This is not good enough for constituents in Mayo or the thousands of pensioners across our island.
“I am calling on the Minister for Social Protection to speed up this process and ensure that reviews are being conducted as quickly and efficiently as possible for those under review in County Mayo,” concluded Deputy Calleary.
