Tackling Congestion

To tackle congestion, there has to be viable and dependable alternatives to private car transport. This means investing in Ireland’s public transport network to ensure that all commuters have an easy way to get to work, whether by cycling, hopping on a bus or train, or by walking.

Get traffic moving

Congestion is grinding our cities to a halt, making it harder to match the right people to the right jobs and to do business. People’s quality of life is being affected as they have to leave hours earlier to make it to work. It is becoming a choke on Ireland’s productivity, and is negatively affecting hundreds of thousands of commuters every day.

To have a healthy transport system, we need a diversity of modes. We will make key investments in rail, bus, pedestrian, and cycling infrastructure to ensure that citizens can use a variety of modes to make trips to work, school, or leisure trips.

Fianna Fáil’s plan to tackle congestion

  1. DART Underground

We will prioritise the DART underground, which has been described by the NTA as the “missing link” in the country’s rail infrastructure. It will unlock considerable capacity on Ireland’s existent transport infrastructure.

  2. Freeze fares

We will freeze fares for three years and introduce fare discounts for young people.

  3. Bus lanes, and real time info

We will invest in bus lanes to remove pinch points and improve priority signalling and Real Time Passenger Information.

  4. Invest in cycling infrastructure

We will invest in cycling infrastructure around the country to make cycling a safe and attractive option to get around.

All Issues in Transport

Better Regional & Local Road Network

A good road network, reliable public transport and modern ports and airports, are key to balanced regional growth and Ireland’s transition to a green economy.

Improving Public Transport

Everyday thousands of Irish commuters spend hours in bumper-to-bumper traffic or on overcrowded buses, with no alternative to get to work.

Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

Currently, buying an electric vehicle is not a viable option for too many Irish people. If Ireland is to meet our climate change targets, this must change.

Establish A National Infrastructure Commission

Fianna Fáil has proposed that a new National Infrastructure Commission tasked with planning ahead over a 25 year period beyond the limited 5 year cycle of current capital plans should be established.

Protecting Ireland’s Ports and Airports

two thirds of Irish exports shipping to continental Europe do so via the United Kingdom, owing to faster connection times and the UK land bridge.
