Help parents stay with their children.

The first years of a child’s life are a critical period, and it is no surprise that many parents wish to spend as much time as possible with their children when they are very young. Parental leave also benefits the wellbeing of parents.

We want to support parents in making the best possible choice for themselves and their children by extending the period of paid maternity leave from 26 to 30 weeks and by altering Ireland’s legislation to allow parents to share this leave, as well as unpaid maternity leave, between them. This will ensure that women who choose to do so can return to work when they see fit, safe in the knowledge that their child is with his or her other parent.

Many employers extend considerable additional assistance to new parents. To support and encourage this, we will introduce legislation requiring all employers with more than 50 employees to publish full details of their parental benefits.

Fianna Fáil’s plan to support parents

  1. Extend maternity leave

Extend paid maternity leave by four additional weeks, bringing the entitlement to 30 weeks.

  2. Allow shared paid leave

Introduce legislation to allow parents to share paid maternity leave between them, thus creating 30 weeks of paid parental leave.

  3. Allow shared unpaid leave

Introduce legislation to allow parents to share unpaid maternity leave between them, allowing for a further entitlement of 16 weeks unpaid parental leave.

  4. Require transparency regarding parental benefits

We will introduce legislation to require all employers with more than 50 employees to publish the details of the benefits they provide to parents of children.

All Issues in Supporting Young Families

Affordable Childcare

Childcare costs are at an all-time high, with the average cost of a fulltime childcare place for a pre-school aged child now at more than €155 per week, far beyond what is affordable for most people in Ireland.

Building Affordable Homes for All

The state has to step up and build affordable units in the right places. This is a core part of Fianna Fail’s vision for securing home ownership for the next generation.

Expand the ECCE Scheme

As a society, investing in early care and education is the most valuable investment we can make.

Primary Focus

We will give reduce class sizes and support primary schools.
