The social welfare system is not perfect and is in need of reform. There is a constant presence of poverty and social exclusion in Irish society. Because of the changing nature of work and the increasing diversity of family types, there is a need for a more flexible system of support that acknowledges work other than paid employment. This merits investigating new methods of providing support to individuals and families.
Therefore, Fianna Fáil will establish a Basic Income Commission to examine the feasibility of introducing a basic income system in Ireland. This commission will be part of an overall effort to create a fairer and more dynamic welfare system, fit for the needs of the 21st century.
