Welfare should be fair
Fianna Fáil believes that the social welfare system is a crucial part of the fabric of Irish society as it is vital to combating poverty and social exclusion.
We believe that the State has a duty to provide support and assistance to people at vulnerable points in their lives and to individuals who are unable to support themselves.
However, the social welfare system is not perfect and is in need of reform as thousands of people continue to be trapped in poverty and are struggling to make ends meet; 780,000 people in Ireland live below the poverty line; 50% of lone parents are experiencing deprivation and 138,000 children are in consistent poverty.
In Government our Party will introduce innovate social policies, increase social welfare rates and actively reform the social welfare system to ensure that it helps and encourages people to reach their full potential.
