Fianna Fáil has a strong record in protecting and empowering Gaeltacht, island and fishing communities. A founding objective of Fianna Fáil is promoting the Irish language as a living language of the people, while ensuring the rights of speakers are protected.
Our national language is an immeasurable cultural treasure. We have always supported the communities living on our islands and fishing communities. Fishing is a crucially important industry for our island.
Fianna Fáil’s plan to support these communities
Programme for development
Introduce a programme for the development of the islands to focus on providing adequate state contracted transport services, infrastructure funding as well as guaranteed access to state services in education and health.
Island co-operatives and development companies must be supported by the state, with policy flexibility shown to island farmers and fishermen.
Irish language strategy
Strongly support the implementation of the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language.
Údarás na Gaeltachta
Strengthen the role played by Údarás na Gaeltachta in developing Gaeltacht regions and ensure Irish speaking communities prosper by increasing the capital funding of the Údarás for business development.
Údarás na Gaeltachta elections.
Reinstate direct elections to the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta.
A sustainable housing policy
Local rural people deserve to be able to live in their own communities. We will promote a sustainable housing policy to ensure social housing investment and planning strategies to enable people to live in their home communities.
Expand tourism opportunities
Expand rural tourism opportunities through the development of rural and marine leisure activities both on our inland rivers and lakes as well as in coastal areas.
Dedicate funding for tourism enterprises
Provide dedicated funding for rural tourism enterprises through government departments and state agencies and the programme will be co-ordinated by a strengthened Comhairle na Tuaithe agus Mara.
Protect traditional coastal fishing areas
Develop and implement a specialised policy for traditional coastal fishing areas in consultation with those communities.
