A way forward for the post office

Post offices are the fabric of rural Ireland and provide an important commercial and social service. This government is happy to stand by as hundreds of post offices shut down.

Fianna Fáil will prevent this by offering a new form of Public Service Obligation payment to post offices that are commercially non-viable but provide an important social function. This will ensure that even the most isolated communities have access to a post office.

  1. Protect our existing network

Guarantee the existing network by identifying post offices that are not commercially viable but are important community centres. These post offices will be paid a PSO payment to remain open. This has been used in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland to save rural post offices.

  2. Expand service offerings

Increase the array of financial services offered by post offices and develop a new community banking model. This will build on post offices’ existent financial services, such as currency exchange and bill payment, and help ensure that communities can continue to access in-person financial services.

  3. A hub for state services

Transform post offices into hubs for state services, such as paying for motor tax, receiving state payments, renewing passports and driver licences, and accessing information on state services. This will reduce the amount of distance that people must travel in order to access state services.
