Keeping Cyclists Safe

Cycling is one of the speediest and greenest ways to get around, and its growing popularity comes as no surprise. Much more needs to be done to support cyclists in our cities and beyond. Fianna Fáil will roll out an array of measures to make cycling safer, easier, and more attractive.

Fianna Fáil’s plan to help cyclists

Cycling is one of the best ways to get cities moving, to keep our air clean, and to promote health and wellbeing. Participation in cycling must be encouraged at every turn, and Fianna Fáil has a range of innovative policies to do so. Our cycling policy is designed to make cycling safer, easier and more attractive for everyone and to entice young and old to start pedalling.

  1. Make cycling safer

Vastly increase the safety of cyclists by developing cycle lanes that are physically segregated from other road users wherever possible. We will also review speed limits to bring Ireland in line with best international practice.

  2. Give cyclists a voice

Create a National Cycling Office to drive cycling policy forward. This office will ensure that the voices of cyclists are heard in transport planning and ensure that Ireland is at the cutting edge of cycle policy. To ensure that cyclists are heard at a local level, we will appoint Cycling Officers to every local authority in Ireland.

  3. Update planning regulations

Update planning regulations to ensure that cyclists are provided for in new and existent developments. This will ensure that cyclists can avail of modern bike storage facilities in their homes, offices, and transport hubs.

  4. Make cycling an attractive alternative

Roll out a suite of measures to encourage new cyclists. This will include a nationwide programme aimed at young people, and an expansion of the Cycle-to-Work Scheme and bike sharing initiatives to make it cheaper than ever to avail of cycling.
