New measures against price volatility

Tillage, like other farming sectors, is experiencing increased price volatility and lower profit returns. Low grain prices along with increased input costs and poor margins over the last number of years has intensified the income crisis and financial hardship for tillage farmers. Meanwhile horticulture farmers are facing an income crisis as a result of unfair trading practices, more regular extreme weather events, increased input costs as well as labour challenges.

The organic sector of Irish farming contributes to Ireland’s green image and the sector needs continuous support through the RDP programme.

Fianna Fáil’s plan to support Tillage, Organic and Horticulture Farmers

  1. Fair price legislation.

Advance fair price legislation to ensure a proper return on price for tillage & horticulture farmers.

  2. A National Food Ombudsman.

Amend consumer law and establish a “National Food Ombudsman”, to protect primary producers in national law and ensure fairness and equity in the food supply chain.

  3. Guard against unfair trading.

Support EU legislative proposals to prohibit unfair trading practices in the EU.

  4. Halt EU import tariffs.

Seek Commission approval for temporary suspension of EU import tariffs on fertilisers to reduce input costs for tillage farmers.

  5. Apply origin labelling to these sectors.

The obligatory labelling of country of origin on product in supermarkets should also be considered to ensure the consumer is aware of the country of origin of vegetables, fruit and potatoes.

  6. Help market “Organic”.

Work with the sector to ensure that all organically certified produce is marketed as “organic” and get the maximum premium possible for producers.
