Speaking ahead of tonight’s opening Olympic ceremony, Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Sport Kevin O’Keeffe said, “From rowing and equestrian to swimming and athletics, Team Ireland showcases the very best of our countries sporting talent spanning 13 disciplines.
“After months of preparation our athletes have demonstrated an unrelenting commitment, determination and resilience to represent Ireland on an international stage and in a bid to achieve their greatest sporting performance.
“They remind us of the potential of sport to bring people of all ages, from all backgrounds and all walks of life together in their support for Team Ireland.
“These games offer our team the opportunity to exhibit the finest in sportsmanship while competing among nations from around the world.
“I extend my very best wishes to our athletes, their coaches and officials participating in the Rio Olympic Games over the next three weeks. I know that their performances will be an immense source of pride for all throughout Ireland.
