Fianna Fáil Councillor Charlie O’Connor has commended the gardaí for their quick response to last night’s fatal shooting in Tallaght.
The local Councillor said the community has been left in shock following the brutal attack on Kiltalown Road.
“This is yet another brazen attack in a busy residential area in south west Dublin, which is populated by young families and older residents. The community is left in shock this morning following the shooting,” Cllr O’Connor said.
“This latest murder is further evidence of just how shameless criminal gangs operating in Dublin have become. There is absolutely no regard for the safety of communities and the innocent people that are put in danger in the vicinity of such attacks. It again highlights the need to reverse the huge cuts to local garda resources at a time when we are seeing an increase in crime levels.
“Garda numbers in the South Dublin Metropolitan Region have been slashed by 100 gardaí since this Government got into power – down from 640 gardaí in 2010 to 540 gardaí this year. The Tallaght garda area alone has lost 41 gardaí over that period – down from 280 to 239. We need to reverse these cuts and allow our local gardaí to increase their presence in the community, boost foot patrols and boost intelligence-led operations against criminal gangs.
“Despite these cuts, the local gardaí have been incredibly swift in their action following this murder. A full scale investigation was mounted and arrests have already been made. I am urging garda management and the Justice Minister to ensure that local gardaí are given every support possible to continue this investigation as quickly and thoroughly as possible, and ensure that justice is done.”
