Responding to news that strike action at Aer Lingus has been averted for next week, Dublin Fingal Senator Darragh O’Brien said: “This is very welcome news for workers and airline customers. It’s in everyone’s best interests that we have a strong, stable Aer Lingus that meets the needs of passengers and its workforce.
The Fianna Fáil Seanad Leader added: “There is no question that the deficit in the pension fund must be addressed. One issue that I know of huge concern to the workers is the news that AIB has used taxpayers’ money to shore-up its pension scheme while no resolution is forthcoming at Aer Lingus. The pension scheme deficit issue has dragged on for far too long under successive governments.
“I think it’s extremely important that all sides continue to engage constructively on this issue, conscious of the lack of fairness workers perceive on this issue. Staff in Aer Lingus, and indeed former workers, have sacrificed a lot to improve the financial position of the airline over recent years.”
