Donegal Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has outlined his priorities as Fianna Fáil Seanad spokesperson on Agriculture, Marine and Food.
Naming his Seanad spokespeople today, the Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin said Senator Ó Domhnaill will play a leadership role in holding this Government to account and in the renewal of the Fianna Fáil party.
Senator Ó Domhnaill said, “I am delighted to take on such an important and challenging role. Agriculture is the largest indigenous sector in this country and will play a crucial role in creating jobs and boosting our exports.
“It is my mission to ensure that this Government recognise the enormous value of the agriculture, fishing and agri-food industries and the pivotal role they play in Ireland’s economic recovery. The new Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney must take a tough approach to the crucial negotiations on the Common Agricultural Policy and the Common Fisheries Policy so that Irish farmers and fishermen get a fair deal from Europe.
“Fianna Fáil is focused on prioritising support for the agriculture sector. That is why we have instigated the first major debate on agriculture of the 31st Dáil. A Fianna Fáil Private Members Motion to be voted on tonight offers a basis for the future of the industry in this country. It urges the government to take a number of decisive steps to ensure that farmers, fisherman and food producers are given every support to grow and create jobs into the future.
“I very much look forward to engaging with those working in the agriculture sector here in Donegal and across the country, to ensure that their needs are fully represented at a national level.”
