Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Agriculture, Éamon Ó Cuív TD, has welcomed the announcement by Glanbia of an €150 million investment in a new milk processing plant that has the potential to create over 1,000 jobs.
Deputy Ó Cuív commented: “The announcement that Glanbia is to construct a new milk processing plant at Belview Port is welcome and has huge potential for job creation in the south east and beyond.
“The investment of €150 million by Glanbia comes after huge strides were made by the previous Government in bringing about the abolition of milk quotas. The decision by the EU to abolish milk quotas in 2015 was confirmed in 2008, with Ireland playing a leading role in securing it to support expansion in the dairy sector.
“The Food Harvest 2020 initiative, which was published in 2010, envisages a 50% increase in milk production by 2020. This has allowed companies like Glanbia to plan ahead for the abolition of milk quotas and the announcement of the new facility in Belview Port is a significant development.
“The knock-on effect of the new milk processing plant will be huge for dairy farmers and could potentially create thousands of direct and indirect jobs. The Agri-Food business in Ireland is thriving and at the forefront of the economic recovery here. The Glanbia announcement will have a very positive effect on the agriculture sector and will help drive expansion and development in the industry.”
