Fianna Fáil TD for Galway West Galway West has Éamon Ó Cuív called on Minister Seán Kyne to outline his plans for the airstrips in Inishbofin and Cleggan. Minister Kyne has confirmed that his Department is currently seeking submission from interested parties in relation to the use of the sites.
Deputy Ó Cuív said, “I believe it is absolutely essential when considering any use of these airstrips that they are retained as airfields, so that connectivity is not lost. It’s also important to that the possibility of providing regular air services to Cleggan and Inisbofin from Indreabhan would be included in any arrangements that are forthcoming.
“I am also calling on Minister Kyne to ensure that any agreement on the airstrips would facilitate the use of the sites by Coastguard helicopters as they are suitable for landing pads for these important services.
“It is a matter of deep regret that this and the last Fine Gael led Government took such a negative view of this basic infrastructure, and are unwilling to provide regular services for the Islanders, similar to those which operate to the Aran Islands. Anyone familiar with the Aran Islands services is aware of the enormous benefits they bring to the islanders in terms of accessing services such as health, education and financial services”.
