Fianna Fáil Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív has called for the renaming of the redrawn Galway West constituency to ‘Galway West-South Mayo’.

Speaking in the Dáil this afternoon (Thursday, 24 January), Deputy Cuív said he will be seeking to amend the Electoral Amendment Bill 2013 in order to rename the new Galway West constituency.

The Fianna Fáil Deputy said, “Maintaining a strong county identity is very important, and no more important than in Mayo whether it is in sport or politics.

“I know there were many people in Mayo who were disappointed that their county was split in recommendations from the Boundary Commission last year, and that part of south Mayo will now be included in the Galway West constituency.  I can understand this disappointment.  Unfortunately, it was inevitable once the Government decided to reduce the number of TDs that part of Mayo would have to be included in another constituency.

“I know that people in south Mayo are anxious that they would be officially recognised in the newly redrawn constituency.  That is why I propose this name change.  There is no reason why such a simple amendment should not be recognised by the Oireachtas. It will not interfere in any way with the work of the Boundary Commission or the recommendations it has already made.”
