Fianna Fáil TD for Galway West Éamon Ó Cuív has strongly criticised changes to the schedule of bus services from Galway to Cong. The changes were made without a full consultation with local people.
Deputy Ó Cuív said, “While I welcome the fact that there will be a small number of additional services, changes to the timetable were brought in without any proper consultation with local people. The new service will also require passengers to change bus in Headford, which will vastly increase the journey time.
“I am very disappointed with the National Transport Authority and its utter failure to consider the needs of rural residents. I would like to see a local link bus for the area, which could link Corr na Mona, Clockbrack and Clonbur to the service to Cong every morning and every evening.
“The NTA needs to sit down with local people and design a bus service that meets their needs. If such a service existed, more people would be encouraged to leave their cars at home and take the bus into Galway and Castlebar.
“The price of tickets must also be examined – services in rural areas are much more expensive than those in urban areas – we need to see more equality if the NTA and the government are serious about encouraging people to use public transport”.
