Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has said the exclusion of the East West link in the TII’s national planning framework for 2018 to 2027 is another example of the government neglecting regions outside of Dublin.

Deputy Smyth commented, “Having raised this matter in the Dáil I understand it will be 2027 before this project could go again bar any exceptional circumstances or change of plan from the government.

“The government have already spent €2 million on the project but now it has been parked. Fine Gael applauded themselves for fiscal prudence yet here is €2 million spent with nothing delivered.

“It does not make sense to invest in enterprise centres in the region, with all the bells and whistle of the launch, yet leave us without an adequate road infrastructure or public transport links.

“Regional imbalance is an issue in the border region. An East West link, from port to port, would go some way to expanding the economic growth in Cavan-Monaghan and wider region,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
