Fianna Fáil TD, John Brassil has said that it is completely unfair on the people of Kerry that there are no chiropodists available to medical card holders in the county.

Deputy Brassil was responding following confirmation, via parliamentary question, that the HSE does not currently have any chiropodists working in the county to deal with patients with medical cards who require attention.

“While the HSE does employ podiatrists in hospital settings for high risk patients, there is no support at a community level.

“We need to see a return to community chiropodists based out of primary care centres calling around to people who might need expert foot care.

“People with diabetes, and older people, are at severe risk of poor foot health. Leaving treating them until they become high risk is short sighted and risks their health.

“I’m very disappointed by the reply from the HSE, and I will be raising this issue with the Minister for Health at the next available opportunity.

“Right across the health service, there are severe gaps in access to services. Why should the people of Kerry not be able to access quality chiropody services when other counties can?” asked Brassil.
