Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on European and Foreign Affairs Seán Haughey TD has said that Ireland’s successful bid to win a seat on the UN Security Council is an endorsement of Ireland’s standing in international affairs.

Deputy Haughey made his comments following Ireland’s successful bid to secure a seat on the UN Security Council.

Commenting Deputy Haughey said, “I very much welcome the news that Ireland has been successful in securing a seat on the UN Security Council and I would like to congratulate all involved in this campaign.

“Ireland has a long and proud affiliation with the United Nations, particularly in the area of peace keeping and I believe that this successful election is an endorsement of our country’s standing in international affairs.

“This seat gives Ireland a platform to play a leading role in conflict resolution and the promotion of peace, democracy and human rights and I am confident that we will use this platform to its full effect,” concluded Deputy Haughey.
