Tánaiste Expresses Condolences on the Death of Councillor Seán Smith, Bawnboy, Co. Cavan

Tánaiste and Uachtarán Fhianna Fáil, Micheál Martin TD has said he is deeply saddened to learn of the death of his party colleague, Councillor Seán Smith.  

“I have learned today, with deep sadness, of the death of our Fianna Fáil party stalwart, my colleague and good friend, Councillor Seán Smith.  

“Seán, a native of Bawnboy, was the essence of what is best about public service. First elected to Cavan County Council in 1979, succeeding his late father, John F, Seán was elected at every subsequent election. He was one of our longest serving councillors with an unbroken, distinguished and exemplary service of 44 years. Seán served as Chairman of Cavan County Council on two occasions, an office he discharged with great distinction.  

“Seán was passionate about the development of his community and county and tirelessly sought to improve the lives of those he represented. His work in relation to agriculture was always deeply impressive. I recall at my last meeting with our group of councillors in Cavan how Seán made the case for more investment in services and infrastructure in areas like West Cavan.  

“Seán’s service to his community, county and Party was exemplary and he made a real and lasting impact and difference. Seán loved his community and represented it with a tireless commitment and energy.  Cavan and Fianna Fáil have lost one of our finest public representatives.  

“On my own behalf, and on behalf of the Fianna Fáil organisation, I offer my deepest sympathy to Seán’s wife Anne, his daughters Eimear and Áine, sons Conor and Kilian, grandchildren, sister Carmel, brothers Brendan (TD), Hughie, Noel, Fr Tommy and Ben, along with the wider Smith family and the community he loved so much. RIP.”
