Top Level Appointments Committee reform leaves unanswered questions – Fleming

Published on: 08 November 2011

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Public Expenditure Seán Fleming has broadly welcomed the reforms announced to the Top Level Appointment Committee (TLAC) following calls from Fianna Fáil to bring forward the changes. Minister Howlin had not intended dealing with this issue for some time and has clearly responded to political pressure to act now.

Deputy Fleming said: “The Minister needs to clarify the following issues arising from his announcement today:

  • · Will lump sums up to €200,000 be tax free, as the Minister has only said lump sums over this figure will be taxed?
  • · Why pensions for Secretaries General retiring after February 2012 will be based on €228,466 even though they are currently paid €200,000?
  • · On what date will the similar procedures for County Managers be finalised?

Deputy Fleming said: “While I broadly welcome the proposals brought forward at my insistence, the Minister has three simple questions to answer immediately.”
