Tipperary TDs deliver joint proposals to Govt Minister over Littleton Closure – Cahill

Published on: 11 May 2017

Fianna Fáil TD for Tipperary, Jackie Cahill has said that he is hopeful that progress can be made on a number of issues that were raised by him, and other deputies, at a meeting with the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Energy surrounding the recently announced closure of the Littleton facility.

“The meeting which originated in the meeting between local TDs and workers last Friday night was sought to raise concerns about the proposed closure.

“As a group, we have sought the following commitments from the Minister:

  • Deferral of closure of plant until after the 2020 harvest;
  • Detailed feasibility studies, and alternate usage proposals, for the site in advance of its closure
  • An improved financial package for those workers who chose redundency

“I believe that the Minister was receptive to the proposals, and while he could not give any guarantees, I am hopeful that progress can be made on all three points.

“The Minister also accepted that the manner by which Bord na Móna, a semi state agency, made the announcement to workers was not acceptable.

“Last week’s announcement has sent the entire community into shock. We need to work together to get the best possible deal for workers, and for the community,” concluded Cahill.
