Taoiseach’s subordination of Reilly undermines health system – Kelleher

Published on: 18 March 2013

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Health, Billy Kelleher TD, has called on the Taoiseach to remove the Minister for Health after reports he is taking personal charge of implementing reforms in the health sector.

Deputy Kelleher commented: “Reports that Enda Kenny is taking personal charge of pushing through reforms in Health is the clearest indication yet that the Taoiseach has lost confidence in Minister Reilly.

“It is also obvious from the reports that the Taoiseach or advisors close to him are the source for this story. Would it not make more sense to remove this discredited Minister for Health, rather than let the matter fester by undermining him? The Taoiseach should step up and relieve Minister Reilly of office.

“This news comes just a few months after we learned that the Tánaiste was seeking second opinions on Minister Reilly’s preferred location for the national children’s hospital.

“There is no doubt but that the Labour Party wants to get rid of Minister Reilly. Now that the Taoiseach’s office is briefing against him it is clear that neither party in government has any confidence in him. This situation is untenable. For the sake of the health system it is time for Minister Reilly to go.”
