Taoiseach’s incompetence highlighted by Eurostat failure – Fleming
28 July 2015
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Public Expenditure and Reform Sean Fleming has said the failure of Irish Water to meet the key Eurostat market test highlights the incompetence of An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and his department.
Deputy Fleming has called on the Taoiseach to appear before the Oireachtas Committee on the Department of An Taoiseach to explain why Irish Water failed the Eurostat test in such a disastrous manner.
Deputy Fleming said, “On 3rd March the Taoiseach was before an Oireachtas committee meeting to present the annual estimate for his department which includes the CSO. At this meeting I questioned the Taoiseach about the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and the Eurostat test. The Taoiseach confirmed to me that the result of the Eurostat test would be delayed. At that time the Taoiseach expressed confidence that Irish Water would pass the Eurostat test.
“In light of these latest developments I am calling on the Taoiseach and his officials in the CSO to appear before the committee to give a clear and proper explanation as to why Irish Water failed the Eurostat test. The Taoiseach and his department reassured the public that they were up to speed on the Eurostat rules and therefore it is an even bigger surprise they got it so wrong.
“They must outline in detail the process which was followed when preparing for this Eurostat test and if they were aware of the likelihood that Irish Water would fail this test. Did they not know when they were submitting the relevant documentation that Irish Water would fail the Eurostat test, and was the Taoiseach hiding this information from the public all along?
“If they submitted the information on the basis that it would pass the Eurostat test then the Taoiseach and his officials in the CSO must explain how they got it so wrong.”
