Supports required for family resource centres in Cavan-Monaghan – Smyth

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has called on the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs to implement changes to the childcare programme to prevent a forthcoming crisis in the sector. Deputy Smyth has been advocating on behalf of Teach Na nDaoine Family Resource Centre, County Monaghan who are calling for changes to be made.

Deputy Smyth commented, “There is a compliancy crisis in community childcare services. I understand services are being asked to ‘deregister’ and ‘reregister’ on the back of Pobal compliance visits and reports. This is causing a significant financial burden.

“Many of these services have been found to be non-compliant because children were registered for sessional/part time service but when attendance were audited this was not the case. These audits neglected to consider the social challenges unique to those using family resource centres.

“There is a serious risk to children in my constituency. Often these services are provided in marginalised areas, areas which need our support.

“Many of the voluntarily managed community childcare services face losing thousands of euro, making them unviable. This must be managed and prevented. There are changes requested and I hope the Minister will consider them,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
