Smyth pushes for restoration of Market House at Heritage Committee – Smyth
30 May 2019
Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan and Fianna Fáil Arts spokesperson, Niamh Smyth TD, has raised the plight of Market House, Castleblayney with officials from the Department of Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht this week.
Deputy Smyth commented, “It is vitally important the Department of Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht work with Monaghan County Council to ensure Market House is restored to its former glory.
“While chairing the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht I was keen to press to Department officials the urgent need to restore Market House with urgency.
“We are limited on artist spaces in Cavan-Monaghan and perhaps Market House can be used as such a space. The building holds huge cultural and historical significance in the town.
“No progress has been made on restoration. Only last week the bell tower and roof were removed to allow a structural survey to take place. It seems the building is only regressing.
“The local community in Castleblayney has done much to support the restoration efforts and the Department should listen to and support their attempts,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
