Senator Alison Comyn Renews Call for Drogheda Veterans’ Support Centre Following National Services Day Launch
Fianna Fáil Senator for Louth and East Meath, Alison Comyn, has renewed her call for a dedicated Veterans’ Support Centre in Drogheda, following the launch of National Services Day at Dublin Castle on Wednesday.
Senator Comyn said the need for local support was underscored by her attendance at last month’s National Day of Commemoration at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham — a moving and dignified ceremony remembering all who died in past wars and on UN service, and honouring all who have served in the Defence Forces.
“As I stood there, I was reminded not just of those we have lost, but of those still with us — many of whom are facing serious challenges such as homelessness, PTSD, poor mental health, unemployment, and family breakdown,” Senator Comyn said. “Too often, they face these struggles in silence.”
Following a recent visit to Brú na bhFiann, the veterans’ hostel in Smithfield run by Óglaigh Náisiúnta na hÉireann (ONE), Senator Comyn praised the essential work being done with limited resources and reiterated her support for a Central Veterans Support Bureau in the GPO programme in the Seanad
She has now formally asked Louth County Council to consider the vacant Kingdom Hall at Millmount, or another suitable premises, as a permanent home for veterans in Drogheda and the wider northeast.
“The northeast has a proud Defence Forces tradition, but veterans here often have to travel to Dublin or Dundalk for help,” Senator Comyn said. “A Drogheda-based centre would make services accessible and show our commitment extends beyond the capital. Respecting service means proving it in our actions — not just with medals and parades, but with housing, healthcare, support, and dignity".
Senator Comyn was proud to stand alongside the ONE members from Drogheda and Slane on Wednesday and is honoured to have been asked to lay a wreath at the National Dublin Castle event on Saturday September 6th
The Drogheda event will take place on the same day from 12pm to 3pm at Merchants Quay.
