Scramblers need to be seized to prevent further injuries – Ardagh

Fianna Fáil Senator Catherine Ardagh has said that a plan by her party to give gardaí powers to seize and destroy quad and scramblers will be a welcome move.

On Thursday evening a woman was hit by a scrambler bike at Drimnagh Luas stop and was hospitalised following the accident.

“This latest accident which left a woman in need of medical treatment is another example of the scourge of scramblers and quad bikes being used on public roads. A serious incident occurred at the Luas stop in Drimnagh on Thursday evening in which someone could have been killed.

“A woman was standing at the Luas stop when a teenager on a scrambler hit her. the motorbike and the youth went into the Grand Canal. Gardaí have been calling for additional powers to deal with this escalating issue and Fianna Fáil will implement legislation to allow Gardaí to compulsorily seize scrambler bikes and quads on suspicion of anti-social behaviour.

“These bikes will then be destroyed if they are not backed up by the appropriate ownership verification. We are seeing streets and parks that should be local amenities being transformed into no-go areas and it’s time that measures were introduced to stop this behaviour,” concluded Senator Ardagh.
