Respite beds welcome but more resources needed for community nursing homes – Scanlon

Published on: 26 October 2016

Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim Eamon Scanlon has welcomed confirmation that additional beds will be provided at Ballymote Community Nursing Unit following refurbishment plans for the facility.  Deputy Scanlon had submitted a range of Parliamentary Questions about the provision of respite beds in Co. Sligo.

“There have been genuine fears in recent months that the number of respite beds available in the county is well below what’s needed.  I am working with a number of families who are finding it difficult to secure respite and long term care for their loved ones because of a lack of beds in the system.

“I welcome the confirmation from the HSE that the refurbishment plans for Ballymote Community Nursing Unit will result in the provision of “six to seven additional beds”, however more needs to be done to address the wider shortage.  It is also imperative that these renovation works are carried out without delay so that the beds can be rolled out as soon as possible”.
