Referendum paramount to protecting Ireland's biodiversity for years to come - O'Sullivan

Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Climate Action, Biodiversity and the Environment, Christopher O'Sullivan, has today welcomed news that the Citizens' Assembly on Biodiversity Loss has voted to recommend that there should be a referendum to give constitutional protection to Ireland's wildlife.

The Fianna Fáil TD for Cork South West said, "This referendum is paramount to protecting the biodiversity of Ireland for years to come. It’s absolutely critical that we move on this with speed and conviction.

"However, we don't have to wait to have a referendum to protect our biodiversity. One of the other findings of the  Citizens' Assembly is that we properly finance protection of biodiversity and habitat. This is something that can be achieved without delay.

"It is of crucial importance that when the Citizens' Assembly publishes its findings, that we as a State and as a Government implement those recommendations to ensure our incredible wildlife is protected for years to come.

"Biodiversity, nature and wildlife right across the globe is in peril, and nowhere more so than right here in Ireland. We need to address this crisis as a matter or urgency. "
