Poor road conditions in the spotlight following Gallagher intervention

Published on: 26 July 2018

Fianna Fáil Senator Robbie Gallagher says the poor state of regional and local roads in Counties Monaghan and Cavan are back in focus after Minister for Transport Shane Ross confirmed that he will visit the region on 21st August.

Senator Gallagher previously raised the need for urgent funding for roads in the Seanad and wrote to Minister Ross to ask him to visit Counties Monaghan and Cavan to see the poor conditions of roads first-hand.

Senator Gallagher said, “Many roads across Monaghan and Cavan are in a dreadful state as a result of the Government’s failure to invest in roads infrastructure. I have raised this matter in the Seanad on a number of occasions and have pressed the Government on the need for additional resources to make roads fit for purpose.

“Minister Ross has recently contacted me to say that he will visit the region in August to see first-hand the poor condition of the roads. I look forward to highlighting the seriousness of the issue during his visit and press him on the need for immediate funding to help repair the roads.

“Over the last 5 years the Government has on average provided Local Authorities with less than half the amount of funding they need to maintain their roads. This is despite a commitment contained in the Programme for Government to increase the capital budget for regional and local roads by approximately 50%. I will keep the pressure on Minister Ross to ensure he delivers on his commitments,” concluded Senator Gallagher.
