No urgency from FG to progress Macroom Community Hospital – Moynihan
19 March 2019
Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North West Aindrias Moynihan has criticised the Minister for Health as delays remain at Macroom Community Hospital.
Speaking during a Dáil debate on Macroom Community Hospital convened at the request of Deputy Moynihan, he commented, “There has been a repeated cycle of plans and commitments and all we are seeing is non-delivery and it’s a massive failure for those who depend and work in Macroom Community Hospital.
“The hospital licence was renewed on the basis that plans for the redevelopment would be advanced. However aside from the appointment of a design team about 3 years after the HIQA report we still haven’t seen concrete developments.
“We have seen other community hospitals in similar positions make progress, but Macroom Community Hospital has been let fall behind.
“The government are taking a very laid-back approach to Macroom and the Minister wouldn’t even recognise the delays or even commit to developing Macroom in time for the extended HIQA deadline.
“The Minister must put energy and emphasis behind Macroom hospital. He must give every support, including a commitment to funding and support as the project must still be released to apply for planning permission.
“There are fears that overspending at the National Children’s Hospital could have negative consequences for our community hospital.
“The staff and their services are second to none. This attentive care has been acknowledged by HIQA but the facilities are not fit for purpose. We need to provide the new build to ensure the patients, staff, and our community receive and provide care in top class surroundings. It is imperative that the Minister give the hospital his full support,” concluded Deputy Moynihan.
